 오랫만에 들어서 넘 감동적이었습니다.

이 노래는 가사의 난해함으로 인해  

그 동안 제대로 해석해 놓은 것이 없을 정도로  

많은 논란이 야기됐던 곡이다.  

팝송의 가사를 이해하려면  

곡이 쓰인 당시의  

사회적 분위기와 문화적 배경을  

검토하는 작업이 반드시 필요하다.  

필자가 많은 외국인과의 인터뷰와 각종 자료를 토대로  

이 노래의 의미를 객관적으로  

파악한 바에 의하면 "Hotel California"는  

표면적으로 사치와 향락 생활을 일삼는  

것으로 유명한 남부 캘리포니아 사람들의  

생활상을 다루고 있는 듯이 보이지만,  

실제로는 60년대의 정치적, 사회적 분위기를  

비유적으로 표현한 곳이다.  

인간의 '욕망', '탐욕', '마약중독',  

또 당시 범람하던 각종 '종교 집단'과  

'베트남 전쟁'에 이르기까지  

다양한 사회 현상을 "Hotel California"라는  

가상 범주에 집어 넣어 당시의 사회  

분위기를 전달하고 있는 것이다.  

고속도로에서 길을 잃은 한 젊은이가  

낯선 곳에서 경험한 일을 회상하는  

독백 형식으로 진행되는 이 노래는  

사교 집단의 종교 의식에  

비유하여 당시의 사회를 그려 내고 있다.
