The head of South Korea's pro-government Uri party last night launched a hunger strike and vowed to resign, in an attempt to revive the ruling camp's flagging campaign before Thursday's parliamentary election.
Chung Dong-young's left-leaning Uri party had until recently appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory in the poll, which will determine the balance of power in South Korea's National Assembly for the next four years.
But the conservative Grand National party (GNP), fighting to preserve its control of parliament, has been showing signs of recovery, suggesting the election could be closer than expected.
Mr Chung has been under pressure to step down since he caused uproar last month by urging elderly voters to stay at home on polling day and let young people decide the country's future.
The election campaign has exposed growing divisions in South Korean society between Uri's young and liberal supporters and older, GNP-voting conservatives.
Mr Chung's pledge to resign after the election appeared designed to appease older voters and banish complacency among Uri's support base about the outcome of the vote. Party officials said his hunger strike was a sacrificial gesture to atone for his comments about the elderly and win back public respect.

Analysts have described this week's poll as one of the most important in South Korea's 17-year democratic history, because its outcome could help settle the fate of Roh Moo-hyun, the country's troubled president.

Mr Roh was suspended from office last month after the GNP and other opposition parties voted to impeach him on politically motivated charges. For Mr Roh to be permanently removed from office, the impeachment must be ratified by the constitutional court and analysts believe the verdict will be influenced by the election result.

Although Mr Roh is not a member of Uri, the party is considered a vehicle for his supporters. Therefore, an Uri victory would be viewed as a vote of confidence in Mr Roh, making it more likely that the court would overturn his impeachment.

A GNP victory would be considered a vote against Mr Roh's reform agenda, making it easier for the court to uphold the impeachment.
한나라당이 총선에서 승리 한다면 국민들이 노무현 대통령의 개혁 정책에 반대한다는 것을 나타내면 헌재의 판결은 탄핵 가결로 굳어질것이다.
Widespread public anger about the opposition parties' treatment of Mr Roh created a surge in support for Uri following his impeachment.
Opinion polls are banned in the run-up to the election, but the most recent surveys showed Uri support at more than 40 per cent, with the GNP languishing at about 20 per cent.
However, the GNP has mounted a fightback in the past fortnight, spearheaded by its new leader, Park Geun-hye, daughter of Park Chung-hee, South Korea's longest-serving president. She has appealed to conservatives and moderates by warning that a landslide Uri victory would hand too much power to the left wing.
